Do you know why some Canadians speak French? Exploration by Jacques Cartier in the 16th century led to the colonization of what we know today as the province of Quebec. The French established settlements, culture, and language. The French Canadians, descendants of these settlers, formed a distinct identity, preserving their language, and traditions, and contributing significantly to Canadian culture. The French spoken in Quebec has evolved into a dialect of French known as “Québécois French” and has separated itself from the usual European French spoken in France due to its isolation from France and the influence of environmental factors. In general, European French speakers have no problems understanding the Québécois. However, they may have some difficulty understanding informal speech like slang. Come learn more about the Francophone world at French Night. Buy your ticket TODAY! Research by Zane Irani.
