"Origins of the flag of Algeria: Did you know how the flag of Algeria was created?
The green and white split on the flag came from the banner that was flown in Algeria's defense against France’s invasion. The red emblem comes from the flag of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled over Algeria until it became a French territory. It became the official flag of Algeria when they won their independence in 1962 and has remained unchanged. The white represents peace, the emblem and green represent Islam, and the red symbolizes the blood of those who died fighting for independence.
